Technical Character Artist

To date, BioStream has developed a prototype of a video game therapy to help children on the autism spectrum improve their social skills. We have also built a research platform that collects players’ physiological and behavioral data and enables the game to make adjustments in real-time based on that data. We have deployed the game in a clinical setting and in classrooms with encouraging results. 

BioStream is seeking a part-time Technical Character Artist in the Boston, MA, Wilmington, DE, or Philadelphia, PA areas to help lead development of our video game therapy moving forward. The technical character artist will be a key member of our technical team at an important time in our growth. We are seeking someone who is highly talented and excited to engage in next-generation science-based video game development with a focus on achieving widespread social good. Responsibilities:

As a Technical Character Artist, you will be responsible for taking ownership over BioStream’s existing character assets by creating new animations for those characters and making adjustments to the existing models, rigs, emotional expressions, and animations on an ongoing basis (as needed). Much of this work is expected to be focused on the characters’ faces. You will also be responsible for lip syncing new character dialogue and making adjustments to existing lip sync clips. Over time, you may also be responsible for modeling, rigging, and animating new characters. You will collaborate closely with other members of the technical team to ensure smooth incorporation of the character assets into the project and to align on specifications and timelines, including via the use of issue tracking software.

Requirements:

Experience and technical skills:

  • Experience with modeling, rigging, and animating in Maya
  • Specific experience with facial modeling and blendshape animation
  • Comfort with Unity Mecanim
  • General familiarity with Unity Editor
  • BA/BS in relevant subject area, or similar or equivalent experience
  • At least 2 years of professional experience performing similar work
  • Preferred: Specific experience with lip syncing

Senior video game developer (Unity / C#)

BioStream is seeking a full-time Unity / C# video game developer in the Boston, MA, Wilmington, DE, or Philadelphia, PA areas to help lead development of our video game therapy moving forward. The senior video game developer will be a key member of our technical team at an important time in our growth. We are seeking someone who is highly talented, able to function with a high level of independence, and excited to engage in next-generation science-based video game development with a focus on achieving widespread social good. Responsibilities:

As a senior video game developer, you will be responsible for taking ownership over various aspects of a video game prototype that has already been developed, iterating on that prototype based on user feedback and clinical trial data, and developing the prototype into a complete game experience using Agile development methodology. In doing so, you will work closely with other developers on our team to get intimately familiar with the code base, incorporate character and environmental assets, and ensure continued integration of the game with BioStream’s research platform. You will also be responsible for making design recommendations and working closely with our product management team to align on requirements and timelines.

Other specific ongoing responsibilities include:

  • Management of system architecture, including designing and executing code refactors as necessary
  • Independently troubleshooting and solving programming defects
  • Management of game flow diagrams and other documentation
  • Collaborating with teammates to manage version control using branches and merge requests
  • Use of issue tracking software to track progress and communicate with team members

Requirements:

Experience and technical skills:

  • BA/BS in computer science or similar, or equivalent experience
  • At least 5 years of professional Unity game development experience
  • Professional, academic, or personal experience as the primary architect and developer of a Unity video game
  • Experience in all stages of the development process, from concept to design, development, and delivery
  • Strong proficiency in C# and Unity
  • Strong grasp of fundamental object-oriented programming concepts and troubleshooting strategies
  • Comfort with version control systems (e.g. Git)
  • Preferred: Basic proficiency in Microsoft SQL Server database and Microsoft ASP.NET web technologies
